Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are said to be searching an allotment in Hannover, Germany.

German police have launched a "large-scale" operation, according to local reports.

Madeleine vanished from Portugal in 2007, with German prisoner Christian Brueckner now named as prime suspect.

The area that police are reportedly searching is close to where Brueckner, who is currently in prison, lived.

Police are also said to have been searching the Linden branch channel, reports German news site Haz.de.

Images published by the paper show police outside the scene although they have not given details on what they expect to find there.

It is understood to be a joint operation between the Braunschweig public prosecutor's office and the Federal Criminal Police Office, the Mirror reports.

A spokesman for the prosecutor's office said: "I do not comment on the background and aim of this measure."

A number of vehicles were at the scene and a sniffer dog has also been used to examine the grounds, reports the Star.

Brueckner was last month publicly identified as the new chief suspect in the case, but prosecutors have admitted they do not have enough evidence to charge him in the McCann case.

Prosecutors claim he was close to the Ocean Club complex in Praia da Luz, Portugal, about an hour before Madeleine is suspected to have been snatched by an intruder, and German criminologist and profiler Mark T Hofman claims there is "no doubt" he was at the scene.

Brueckner is alleged to have had a 30-minute phone call outside the apartment building shortly before she went missing.

German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters previously said a phone allegedly used by Brueckner pinged on a mast at the Ocean Club complex.

Earlier this month authorities searched three disused wells in the in Vila do Bispo region of Portugal as part of their investigation into Madeleine's disappearance.

Police and divers in the Algarve region were at the scene with specialist diving equipment to examine the wells, with the largest thought to be more than 13 metres deep.

The area is around 10 miles from the Praia da Luz resort, where Madeleine vanished on May 3, 2007 just days before her fourth birthday, while on holiday with her family.

Her mum and dad Kate and Gerry had left her and her 18-month-old twin siblings Sean and Amelie sleeping in their flat while the parents went for dinner with friends at a restaurant nearby.
